چکیده

The global positioning system (GPS) is one of the most important and useful technology that has been developed for information and communication technology. The propagated wireless signals along GPS link are affected by the ionospheric electron density irregularities, so the GPS signals may experience amplitude and phase fluctuations. The global navigation satellite system (GNSS) ionospheric scintillation and total electron content (TEC) monitor (GISTM) receiver has been installed at UTeM, Malaysia (2.3139N, 102.3183E) for the purpose of monitoring ionospheric scintillation during solar maximum cycle 2013/2014 for six months October 2013 – March 2014. In this paper, the GPS ionospheric scintillations are concerned for the dual frequency L1 (fL1 = 1.57542 GHz), and L2C (fL2= 1.2276 GHz). The ionospheric amplitude/phase scintillation of GPS satellites is reported. Finally, a new algorithm is suggested to enhance the GPS positioning system based on the availability of GPS and precise point positioning (PPP) approach.

Ionospheric Scintillation Effects on GPS Receivers during Solar Minimum and Maximum

The ionosphere has practical importance in GPS (Global Positioning System) applications because it influences transionospheric radio wave propagation. Among various phenomena in the ionosphere, ionospheric scintillation is characterized by rapid fluctuation and fading of the received signal intensity due to electron density irregularity inside the ionosphere. Deep signal fading caused by scinti...

A Comparison of GPS Performance in a Scintillation Environment at Ascension Island

Post-sunset disturbances in the equatorial ionosphere routinely cause rapid phase and amplitude fluctuations (i.e., scintillation) of radio waves propagating through the disturbed regions. The intensity of scintillations is positively correlated with the solar cycle and the associated signal fades will often exceed 20 dB at L-band frequencies during solar maximum. The effect of such an environm...

Scintillation Characteristics across the GPS Frequency Band

We investigate the characteristics of ionospheric scintillation across the entire GPS frequency band spanning the L5–L1 carrier signals (1176 MHz–1575 MHz). Of particular interest is the intensity correlation between carrier pairs, since this dictates the extent to which frequency diversity may be leveraged to mitigate scintillation impacts on navigation accuracy. Since only a few satellites cu...

Evaluation of Deep Signal Fading Effects Due to Ionospheric Scintillation on GPS Aviation Receivers

Deep and frequent GPS signal fading due to strong ionospheric scintillation is major concern for aircraft navigation in the equatorial region during solar maximum periods. Deep signal fading can break a receiver’s carrier tracking lock on a satellite channel and the satellite cannot be used for position solution until a receiver reacquires the lost channel. Frequent signal fading also causes fr...

Characteristics of Deep Gps Signal Fading Due to Ionospheric Scintillation for Aviation Receiver Design

Aircraft navigation based on GPS (Global Positioning System) and WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) requires both code and carrier measurements to calculate the position estimate [1]. A GPS receiver’s carrier tracking loop is weaker than code tracking loop. Thus, carrier lock can more easily be broken under deep signal fading caused by ionospheric scintillation. If a receiver cannot track cod...
